After first being named "Best New SUV/CUV ($35,000 to $60,000)" in the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada's annual "Test Fest" last fall (beating the X1, Durango, Explorer and Evoque), the 2012 Touareg TDI was named overall Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year.

The Touareg beat out the BMW X3 (Best New SUV/CUV over $60k) and the Dodge Journey (Best New SUV/CUV under 35K).

More after the jump.

"Winning this award is a tremendous honour, said Mr. John White, President of Volkswagen Canada. "The Volkswagen Touareg is extremely capable both on and off road, and surrounds its passengers in comfort and luxury. We are very pleased to be recognized for all of the hard work our engineers and designers have put in."

The Touareg TDI features a 3.0L V6 diesel mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Power output is rated at 225hp and 406 lb/ft. of torque. Despite the power and the mass (it weighs about 5000lbs.), fuel consumption is a relatively modest 11.2L city, 6.8L highway.

The Touareg TDI starts at $53,575.
