Big changes at Mosport, including the name

A name change can be a polarizing move. For some time, P. Ditty, formally Puff Daddy, and “The artist formally known as Prince” became punch lines for late night talk show hosts (well, rightfully so in those cases). When it comes to business, it can actually work out quite well. The Rogers Centre has replaced the SkyDome in our vocabulary, and Canadian Tire hopes the same will happen with the newly announced name change to Mosport International Raceway with the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

The name change won’t be the only thing that race fans will notice this summer, entry to the track’s interior has been made much easier with the addition of a new (truck friendly!) tunnel. Mosport’s Canadian Tire Motorsport Park’s new owners, Canadian Motorsport Ventures, Ltd, have been promising vast improvements since their takeover in June.

The question is, will people embrace the name change as they did with Infineon Raceway (formally Sears Point), or, like Laguna Seca (a.k.a. Mazda Raceway), will sponsorship be ignored in favour of the name that’s been used since the track opened in 1961?

been going to mosport for years for the alms series races. i don't know if this year the name will catch on, but in time the name will ease into our vocabulary. Most people still call Rogers center by its superior SKY DOME name. As long as the atmosphere doesn't change people will keep flocking to the track for the many events being held after the long cool months. I look forward to the many changes being made to the track as well. not just the new tunnel. Over the past few years they have added a few more screens and speakers for the spectators and all the money that is being spent will only have a positive effect. Weather its Mosport International Raceway or Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, its the closest place to the gta where u can watch some great racing.

I'm very disappointed at this name change. I grew up in Buffalo and have always heard of Mosport, and finally brought my sons up for the ALMS race in 2008 and we fell in love with the place and have returned every year since. (And yes, we know how to pronounce it right!). This trend of corporate names on sports venues is obviously unstoppable, but I think it takes away from the identity of the facility. There are multiple Rogers centers and Pepsi centers, and then when the contract is up, the name can change again, and no one really knows from the name, what or where the place is. I think in this case it is short sighted and overlooks the brand value of an established name such as Mosport. This hardly compares with the Rogers center/Skydome thing - that place has not been around since 1961 and has not been host to such historic events as Mosport has in racing, and outside of Toronato (and maybe Buffalo) no one knows the Skydome name. Mosport is known worldwide in racing. I understand the financial impact to the facility, but I wish it didn't keep happening to great tracks like Laguna Seca and Sears point. I still refer to them by their original names, but that doesn't matter much to the rest of the world. I hope it never happens to Watkins Glen, Road America, Indy, Sebring, Silverstone, etc. I'm stocking up on Mosport merchandise in case it is no longer available some day!
